I was always interested in knowing more about Girty, since where I was raised along the Susquehannah River, there had been, until recent times, a famous visitor's site along Rts. 11 named Girty's Notch/5. Simon Girty was an important frontiersman in the Ohio Country in the years before, during, and after the American Revolution. Girty was born in in Chambers Mill, Pennsylvania. American Indians eventually killed Girty's father.

By the time Girty was fourteen his family had moved to Sherman's Creek in eastern Pennsylvania. The island is the largest in Henry County and has extensive history dating back thousands of years. Archeology completed by both the University of Toledo and Defiance College near the island provided a clear timeline of early Archaic American Indian people camping and living in villages overlooking Girty’s Island dating back BCE.
